HOME DECORATING FOR THE HOLIDAYS

There’s just nothing like the fresh fragrance of fresh cut wreaths, trees, garlands, and outdoor arrangements to decorate your home for the holidays.

Wreaths were worn on the heads of the elite long before they were used on doorways to welcome people to their home. Today they don’t just have to be on the front door. They are suitable for inside and outside the home, over the fireplace, on doorways, on the wall, even as a centrepiece on a table…wherever your creative mind takes you. They add beautiful colour and the sweet fragrance that only fresh greens can give. They can be customized to reflect your style and personality and of course your décor.

Another option for doorways and over fireplaces is swags. Whether you choose to create them yourself or buy them ready to hang, you can always add a bow or some ornaments to reflect your style.

When it comes to trees, it’s best to choose a tree to fit in the space you have. Different trees have different properties. For example, the Balsam Fir is the most fragrant of all. Keep that in mind when choosing the tree for you.

Garland comes in cedar, white pine, and Douglas Fir, depending on the thickness you want. You can blend types together for an interesting look. You can hang the garland on its own or wrap it with lights, ribbon, pine cones…or a combination…add your own touch. The traditional look is garland with red ribbon with or without bows. Garland can be used inside and outside. Outside here in York Region, it will last until the end of January. Inside, maybe till just after Christmas but it makes your home smell divine. It can be draped on the porch roof or wrapped around poles; draped on a fence or a sign at the end of your driveway or around your doorway.

The most important thing of all is to create a style that you’re happy living in. Make decorating a family endeavour, make it fun. Have special ornaments the kids made when they were little and have them help decorate the tree. Maybe you’ve collected ornaments from places you’ve been so Christmas becomes a time to reflect about your life. You can decorate a tree in so many ways, by colour, shape of ornament, type of ornament, even photos…it’s your expression of what Christmas means to you.

Keep your budget in mind. Be reasonable. There’s no need to go into debt when decorating for the holidays. It’s a time of magic, beauty, and togetherness. Enjoy the magic of family.
